BACKPACKING GEAR LIST

 
Although not all of the equipment listed is necessary for every trek. Consider carrying the items that offer a safe, comfortable trip for the terrain and weather conditions you will encounter. Be sure to check out the

CLOTHING FOR 3 SEASONS:

  • 3 pair of Wool or Synthetic blend socks and sock liners.
  • Hiking pants or shorts
  • A wicking shirt is best but a cotton tee shirt is ok in warm climates.
  • Rain/Wind Gear: Low Tec option: A conventional breathable nylon jacket & pants with a waterproof rain coat. High Tec Option: A Gore-tex or other breathable waterproofing material jacket & pants.
  • Gaiters
  • Hiking Boots with extra laces ~ Bandana:
  • Ball Cap of other type of hat.

  • Compass

  • Itinerary left with a reliable friend
  • Backpack: A backpack can be internal or an external frame pack. If your a scout heading to Philmont they require a 3200 cubic inch pack or larger.
  • Tent or Shelter
  • Stove with fuel & repair parts
  • Cook Kit and Cup
  • Cooking utensils
  • First Aid Kit: Have one that will meet the needs of your group
  • Pocket Knife or Multi-tool:
  • Water Proof Matches/Lighter
  • Plastic Whistle:

  • Toiletries: (Biodegradable soap, toothpaste, foot powder and other personal needs)

WATER & FOOD

  • 2-1 liter water bottles filled
  • Water Purifier or tablets
  • Hydration bag
  • Breakfast: Try tea, coffee, hot chocolate or hot Jello for your drinks and oatmeal, grits, or granola with dried fruits for your meal.
  • Lunch/Snacks: High-calorie quick-bum energy food - dried fruit, candy, bagels, preserved meats or cheese (diced in advance), fruitcake, small sandwiches, nuts, cookies, Gorp.
  • Supper: Freeze dried/ or dehydrated foods; Store bought or your own. Also try "Glop" a mixture if instant rice or noodles with veggies, dried meat and cheese or instant soup mix.
