CYCLING LAWS IN RHODE ISLAND

Helmet Law: Any person fifteen (15) years of age or younger who is operating or who is a passenger on a bicycle on a public highway, bicycle path, shared use path, park and/ or recreational area, school property or on any other public right of way shall wear a helmet.

Bikes Right of Road: Every person operating a bicycle upon a public highway, bicycle path, or shared use path, shall ride as near to the right side of the roadway as possible.

Traffic Laws: Every person riding bicycle, or propelling a vehicle by human power shall be granted all of the rights and shall be subject to all of the duties applicable to the driver of any other vehicle.

Turn and Stop Signals: A signal of intention to turn right or left when required shall be given not less than 100' by the cyclist before turning, and shall be given while the bicycle is stopped waiting to turn. A signal by hand and arm need not be given continuously if the hand is needed in control or operation of the bicycle.
